Your information, and how we look after it.
This policy explains what personal information Njanghi collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have under POPIA.
This page is illustrative template copy for a demonstration site — it is not legal advice and does not describe a live financial product. Figures, registration numbers, and contact details are placeholders.
Introduction & scope
This Privacy policy explains how Njanghi ("we", "us") collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal information when you use our website and app. It is written with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) in mind.
It applies to everyone who uses Njanghi — group members, group admins, and visitors to our site.
Information we collect
- Identity & verification data: name, date of birth, ID number, and documents required to verify you under FICA.
- Contact details: email address, phone number, and postal/physical address.
- Group & financial data: the groups you belong to, contribution and payout history, loan and claim records, and contribution reliability.
- Device & usage data: device type, app version, IP address, and how you interact with the service.
How we use your information
- Create and manage your account and the groups you belong to.
- Process contributions, payouts, loans, and cover claims.
- Calculate trust scores and group health from contribution history.
- Provide support, send service notifications, and keep you informed.
- Detect, prevent, and investigate fraud, abuse, and security incidents.
- Meet our legal, regulatory, and tax obligations.
Legal basis for processing
Under POPIA we process your information where it is necessary to perform our contract with you (running your savings groups), to comply with a legal obligation (such as FICA verification), to pursue a legitimate interest (such as preventing fraud), or where you have given your consent. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
Payment & mobile-money partners
To move money, we work with banks, payment processors, and mobile-money providers. These partners receive only the information needed to process a transaction (such as amounts and the relevant account or wallet details) and handle it under their own terms and privacy notices.
Cross-border transfers
Some of our service providers may process data outside South Africa. Where personal information is transferred across borders, we do so in line with POPIA section 72 — only where the recipient is subject to laws, binding rules, or contracts that provide an adequate level of protection comparable to POPIA.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as you have an account and as long as needed for the purposes described here. Some records must be kept for minimum periods set by law — for example, FICA and tax rules require certain financial records to be retained for several years after your relationship with us ends. After that, we delete or anonymise the data.
Your rights under POPIA
- Ask what personal information we hold about you and request a copy.
- Ask us to correct or update information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Ask us to delete information we are no longer entitled to keep.
- Object to certain processing, and withdraw consent where we rely on it.
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) if you believe your rights have been infringed.
Children
Njanghi is intended for adults (18 and over). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "last updated" date and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Continuing to use Njanghi after a change means you accept the updated policy.
